Japan

Japan, lying off the eastern coast of the Asian continent, consists of four main islands – Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu - as well as thousands of adjacent smaller islands. Japan’s total land area is 378 km² with a population of about 126.5 million, the ninth highest in the world. Mount Fuji, the country’s highest peak, is a dormant volcano.

Fukuoka

Fukuoka is rich in natural beauty, which is evident throughout the city. As a Portal for the culture of the Asian continent since ancient times, Fukuoka has flourished as an internationally oriented city. Situated closer to Pusan and Seoul than to Tokyo, the city is currently experiencing dynamic growth and development as a focal city for exchange within East Asia. Fukuoka boasts numerous international air and sea routes throughout the East Asians and Pacific regions, including Australia.

Japan’s metropolis is a mixture of old traditions and modern architecture – you will find old temples, shrines and myths next to modern skyscrapers and crowds of people.

Japan’s oldest Zen temple is the Shofukuji Temple which was built in the 12th century by the founder of Zen. We also recommend a visit to the Tochoji Temple which holds a wooden statue of Buddha. It is open to visitors every day. To see Fukuoka at the time of the Meiji and Taisho period, we recommend a visit to the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. You will learn a lot about the way of living and the customs of that time.
The Fukuoka Art Museum holds paintings of Andy Warhol and Marc Chagall as well as various Japanese artists.
Tenjin is an ideal part of town for shopping. It has underground links to other shopping centres which make it an ideal pastime even in rainy weather.
Nakasu, located on a large sand bank, is the largest entertainment centre in Japan. Its neon lights are mirrored in the Naka River and attract people to relax after their working day. The beautiful river promenade invites you to join the crowds and relax. We also recommend the entertainment complex Hakata. This futuristic part of town is the first of its kind in Japan. It has an artificial river, as well as various theatres and hotels.
